Creating High-Performing Teams in your organization

Teams are the fundamental unit of decision-making and execution, learning, and innovation in organizations today.

Teams are usually part of even larger teams, and as a result of our global reach, usually consist of a virtual dimension comprised of people from across hierarchical and functional boundaries. They require a deliberate approach to form and launch the teams, and a skillfully used and collaborative environment allows them to perform at the highest levels.

A highly capable team shares common understanding and purpose, has a high degree of trust and confidence in one another, and develops a unique team competence as a result of guided deliberate experience. Teams of Leaders cross boundaries and work collaboratively where there is little authority or chain of command. They are driven by their shared vision and purpose. Teams of Leaders make and execute decisions effectively. They continuously learn and adapt, drawing on and building organizational, inter-organizational, and global knowledge resources and relationships.

High-performing teams do not occur by happenstance. SKS has developed a deliberate and thoughtful approach for building these high-performing teams.

The Teams of Leaders  approach develops skilled communication and collaboration, which is the key to building and employing highly-capable teams. Developing and employing collaborative intent and skill requires coached, deliberate practice to:
  • Cultivate relationships
  • Manage and enable conversations between people
  • Build shared trust, purpose, confidence, and competence
The SKS Teams of Leaders  approach builds an integrated knowledge environment where technical information management and telecommunications systems are combined with collaborative knowledge management processes. These are then enhanced by a team development exercise to accelerate high performance.

When needed, SKS applies its advanced blended learning expertise to create digital practice fields that support leader-team development exercises, decision games, and judgment exercises.

SKS developed the initial approach in 2008 with a talented team of thought leaders and practitioners from the U.S. Military, Dynamics Research Corporation, Computer Science Corporation, NetAge, and the Army Research Institute and published a Teams of Leaders handbook and Teams of Leaders Coaching Guide in 2009. Today SKS continues to work with the U.S. Army Europe; Joint Task Force North in El Paso, Texas; the Center for Collaborative Leadership in Healthcare at Central Michigan University; and The University of Western Ontario to build higher performing cross-boundary teams. This approach has shown to be successful in industry, academic, government, and interagency team situations.
